It is worth pointing out that while Outlook 2013/2016 on PC use MAPI/HTTP or RPC/HTTP to connect to Exchange 2013/2016 servers, both clients on Mac (Mac‘s own Mail client and Microsoft Outlook for Mac) use EWS to connect.

I am getting the following errors in outlook when I try to get GMAIL from Outlook. I have been using this method for years now and have not had this error before. I have verified the settings in both outlook and gmail settings. I restored my system to a backup from Thursday when it was working.
It still has the same issue. I have connected my laptop to different ISPs (AT&T and Comcast). Still the same issue. I tried to ping and (names and IP address) but get a 'general failure'.
I can access the email from my browser without any issues and all other internet and online functions work. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Task '@ - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108): 'Outlook cannot connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).' Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Outlook cannot connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). Send test e-mail message: Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server.
If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). Bkc56 10/3/2012, 21:08 น. Thank you for the reply. Verified that 2-step verification is OFF. I have tried everything listed in your links (including but not limited to changing password, clearing captcha, my emails only checks every 30 min (when open), deleting my email account (now I can not re-add it because it can not connect to the servers), verified all outlook settings, changed and re-changed gmail settings. Added another pop3 account (from ISP) to outlook and it worked correctly.
I read through other forums and have tried everything listed. This started yesterday, after years with no problems. Really confused on what is going on. I just setup my gmail to forward to my ISP account so I can use my Outlook still, but I need to get this resolved. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Bkc56 10/3/2012, 22:00 น. Here is the output of my logs. (XXXXX) is ID - This has all three of the accounts I have in Outlook. When send/recieve is pushed here is the error that shows up: 'Task ' - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108): 'Outlook cannot connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server.
If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).' ' Thanks again for helping. UPDATE. Ok, so I created a second gmail account and encountered the same issue. I then setup outlook/thunderbird on a clean win7 machine and a clean linux machine. Both of these worked without issues.
My restores do not go back far enough (only last 2 days) so I was unable to go past that. I am going to do a complete clean install on my laptop as I believe there is something in Windows 7 system files that is causing the issue.
If anyone has an idea to what I can do besides that I would enjoy the recommendations. Thank you all for you help. The C Man (Call me C) Ex TC 11/3/2012, 14:16 น. I would agree with you to some extent.
However, my issue started on Friday the 9th of March, and I rolled back to Thursday March 8th. No updates had occured between those times, That I could see, and no programs were installed. Not sure where the change came from. But it did not resolve my problem. I am updating another laptop that has win7 on it and it has been sitting around, so I will test again shortly once the updates are done. It worked fine about an hour ago when I tested POP mail on it.
I will update and let you know how things go. If the updates do not break that machine, I am going to go head and reimage my main laptop. Robert68 11/3/2012, 15:00 น. UPDATE. I think I am done now. I updated another PC with all updates (Windows 7) and everything worked fine.
I am just going to re-image my laptop. A side note of other trouble shooting I did in hopes it may help others: I uninstalled and re-installed Outlook (2010) I deleted all registry keys associated with Outlook in HKCU and HKLM.
I deleted all.pst files and Outlook data in Documents and AppData I restored back to a previous day before the issue started. I disabled firewall, and uninstalled MS Sec Essentials (it was the only updates received so I thought I would try) I know it is not a Gmail or Google issue as my POP3 accounts work fine on other machines. Just not sure where to find the issue. Thanks for all the recommendations everyone provided. Robert68 11/3/2012, 16:53 น. LAST UPDATE - RESOLVED. So I was saving files in preparations to re-image my laptop.
In doing so I also noticed that my router had an older version of the firmware so I thought, 'what the heck, might as well do everything all at once today' (I have the Netgear WNDR3800). After I upgraded the router and reset all the settings back (manually) POP3 worked on my laptop again with no issues. Not sure what the issue was, but it had to correspond to my IP/MAC for this specific laptop because all the other ones worked fine. Thanks again everyone.
The C Man (Call me C) Ex TC 11/3/2012, 18:12 น. I have been struggling for 6 months with this problem. Two very good IT-people I hired to solve it for me, spent too many hours to try everything plus converting my emails to another format and ended up giving me an unlock- Captcha-link, which somehow makes OUTLOOK function for a while again (max. 2 weeks)until it starts all over. Both IT-people said, it has something to do with GOOGLE. So far it has cost me ca.
$ 500 plus too many hours of y time.I am so fed up, that I am going to snail mail GOOGLE. I encourage you to do the same: Google Headquarters Customer Service 1600 Amphitheater Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043 (650) 253-0000 Ross68 28/6/2012, 9:42 น. Sorry for not updating my resolution. After trying many different things with different results (after my last resolve update, it worked for a short time then started again), I finally found the answer to MY ISSUE. I am not sure if this will help many people here, but I use 'Peer Block' on my system. Though I never had an issue before, I started having issue when this came up. I found that some (not all) of the servers that I was trying to connect to were being block by Peer Block, hence the working sometimes and not the others.
I have added the blocked sites for Google to my allowed sites and have had no further issues since then. Hope this at least helps someone.
